Windows Server 2008 is one of the most popular operating systems out there but come 2020 Microsoft will be officially ending its support for the server. This gives you plenty of time to think about and plan your upgrade.

By the 14th of January 2020 Microsoft will no longer support this server, meaning your operating systems will be vulnerable and exposed to security, ultimately putting your overall business at risk. It also leaves you missing out on the new features the updated servers have to offer, which in turn improve the efficiency of your business.

Replacing your server

As Windows 2008 is no longer going to be supported you’ll want to migrate all of your data and third-party software to a cloud-based system, such as Office 365, early before your server is replaced to avoid anything happening to things such as your emails.

Migrating to a new server is very time consuming since everything on the old one has to be switched across, by the PC having to be detached from the old server, then it being reattached to the newer server. This will result in a new profile for each user so all emails, software etc will have to be setup again.

Pros and Cons of a new internal server

  • Pro: All data can be accessed locally
  • Pro: Users can share peripherals such as printers, scanner etc on the network
  • Pro: Security and access control can also be managed internally
  • Con: Users may have issues accessing the remote data unless an additional serve are installed.
