Windows 10 will reach its End of Life (EOL) on 14th October 2025. Before Windows 10 reaches its EOL, users should take certain actions to ensure the security and functionality of their systems.
What is Windows 10 EOL?
Microsoft has a lifecycle policy for its operating systems, and at some point, each version reaches its “End of Life” (EOL). 10 years after its first release in 2015 Windows 10 will no longer receive or provide bug fixes for issues, security fixes for vulnerabilities, time zone updates, or technical support.
Upgrade to a newer version of Windows
Microsoft usually releases a new version of Windows before the EOL of the current one. With the early release, users can upgrade to the latest version to continue receiving security updates, support, performance improvements, and new features. Windows 11 is the most secure Windows yet. Its extensive capabilities, including Co-pilot in Windows, are designed to help keep your organisation protected and productive. These measures include built-in advanced encryption, data and credential protection, robust system security and network safety, and intelligent safeguards against evolving threats.
Upgrading to Windows 11
Windows 11 stands out as the most secure version of Windows to date. Its robust features, such as Copilot in Windows, are meticulously crafted to enhance the protection and productivity of your organisation. These include comprehensive built-in advanced encryption, safeguarding data and credentials, ensuring strong system security, promoting network safety, and incorporating intelligent defences against emerging threats.
To embrace Windows 11, you have various options:
- Acquire New Windows 11 Pro PCs: Purchase new Windows 11 Pro PCs equipped with default activation of excellent security features. Suppliers can streamline the process by directly shipping these new PCs to employees through Windows Autopilot, minimising the time needed for staging.
- Matrix can help you upgrade: The Matrix IT experts can upgrade users existing PCs to Windows 11 for them so they are all set before Windows 10 EOL.
What if you can’t upgrade?
While Microsoft highly recommend transitioning to Windows 11, they acknowledge that certain circumstances may impede the replacement of Windows 10 devices before the End of Support (EOS) date. Consequently, Microsoft will introduce the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
Similar to the Windows 7 ESU initiative, organisations will have the option to acquire an annual subscription for security updates. This commitment is renewable for up to three years, ensuring that devices enrolled in ESUs receive monthly security updates to maintain the security of Windows 10 PCs.
The Windows 10 ESU program will specifically cover critical and/or important security updates. It does not encompass new features, non-security updates requested by customers, or requests for design changes. Additionally, technical support beyond the ESU itself will not be provided.
- For Windows 365 customers, ESUs will be offered for Windows 10 devices connecting to a Cloud PC running Windows 11 at no extra cost.
- Likewise, for those utilising Windows 10 instances in Azure Virtual Desktop, ESUs will be available on those virtual machines at no additional charge (consumption not included).
