ABOUT CYBER ESSENTIALS
The scheme was specially developed by the UK Government and National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to make the UK a safer place to live and do business online. The certification process has been designed to support businesses, from large established corporate organisations to new start-up SMEs, with a manageable approach to cyber security.
The Cyber Essentials scheme aims to offer protection against up to 80% of breaches. Widely recognised as a benchmark of good cyber hygiene, certified companies demonstrate that they have taken the necessary steps to safeguard sensitive data and maximise cyber protection
WHAT ARE THE 5 KEY CYBER ESSENTIAL MEASURES?
The framework sets out 5 key technical measures to help protect businesses against the most common cyber threats.
Access controls
Firewalls
Malware protection
Secure configuration and network management
Software updates and patching
HOW TO BECOME CYBER ESSENTIALS CERTIFIED
As a fully trained certified consultant, we’ll help you implement and achieve the Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certifications.
Cyber Essentials
Since 2015, Matrix IT has been taking companies of all sizes and across industries through the application process. As certified Cyber Essentials consultants, we are uniquely placed to take you through your initial certification, help maintain interim compliance and recertify.
The Cyber Essentials certification requires that you implement technical measures and documented processes to secure your systems which forms your application.
Cyber Essentials Plus
Cyber Essentials Plus is built on the Cyber Essentials simplicity of approach, and the protections you need to put in place are the same, but to become Plus certified a technical verification is carried out by the certification body.
During the technical audit, a range of vulnerability scans is run against a sample of end-user and network devices to check that your systems are Cyber Essentials compliant.
Cyber Essentials Plus must be completed at the same time or within 3 months of an initial Cyber Essentials certification.
Matrix IT can help your business become Cyber Essentials certified. Whichever level you are applying for, Matrix IT can guide you through the process or manage the application for you.
Why is Cyber Security so Important?
Cyber Security is important because it protects your business data from theft and damage. This includes sensitive data, personally identifiable information (PII), personal information and data.
The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2021, published on 24 March 2021 states that four in ten businesses (39%) report having cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months.
The most common by far is phishing – staff receiving fraudulent emails or being directed to fraudulent websites. This is followed, to a much lesser extent, by impersonation and then viruses or other malware.
Types of breaches or attacks identified in 2021
-
- 83% Phishing Attacks
- 27% Others impersonating organisation in emails or online
- 9% Virus, spyware or malware (excluding ransomware)
- 7% Ransomware
- 7% Takeovers of organisation’s or users’ accounts
- 2% Unauthorised accessing of files or networks by outsiders
- 2% Unauthorised accessing of files or networks by staff
